Moving house is without doubt a major upheaval in our lives so proper planning is not only advisable but in many cases absolutely necessary. The management and staff have put together a comprehensive Moving Checklist to help you keep track of tasks essential to a well organised and low-stress move. Please call us on if you have any questions regarding your move.
4 – 6 Weeks Prior to Moving... Settle on a firm date for moving with your removal company.
Furniture
When planning your move, consider:
Is your new home big enough to take ALL your furniture. Is the access suitable for your furniture and appliances to be carried inside.
Mail Redirection to the new address
Contact your local Post Office and arrange to have your mail redirected to your new address.
Packing Up
Create a realistic “Packing Up Plan” which includes specific tasks for everyone involved (including the kids). Ask us about our packing boxes, portable wardrobes, tape, bubble wrap and other packing materials.
Arrange for a skip bin / mini skip or rubbish removal service.
Be prepared for a bit of a shock with the amount of “useless stuff” and rubbish you have accumulated.
Begin using all the food in your freezer to prevent wasting it when you move.
Once your Packing Plan is complete start it straight away. Yes, next week really is too late.
Complete a written inventory of all items packed. Eg. Box No. 8, Pots, Pans, Blender.
Check your home insurance policy. Does it cover the move?
Make a list of items you’ll need available for the moving day, so that you don’t pack something essential like spare clothing, first aid kit etc.
2 Weeks Leading up to the Move
Organise your utility accounts You would be surprised at how many people forget to cancel their electricity, gas, phone, internet and water accounts. Although most utility companies allow you to notify them of changes online, in almost every case a phone call is required to verify security details. A great idea is to arrange cancellations at the same time you are arranging utilities for your new address.
Cleaning Up
If your budget allows it engage professional cleaners if you are going to clean your residence prior to leaving. If you are renting liaise with your property manager to specify the condition of the premises when you vacate. This will save on dramas with the full return of your rental bond. Cleaning a house or unit from top to bottom is a labour intensive energy sapping task which when combined with packing and moving can be a tad overwhelming for many people.
Moving Day
Confirm key collection arrangements with your real estate agent or solicitor
Make sure important documents and jewellery are fully secure and under your care at all times
Pack a box of items you’ll need for immediate use in your new home, including some toiletries, a change of clothes, medicines, toilet paper, soap and towels
Pack another box with kitchen essentials for the move day such as a kettle, cutlery, mugs, tea, coffee and snacks
Do a final check of all storage areas
On moving day an early start will pay big dividends by the end of the day
Turn off electricity at the meter box
Check that all doors and windows are securely locked as you leave your old premises
Be sure to keep your valuables, personal effects and important papers with you, so they don’t go astray
Unpack bedding and make up beds as soon as possible – you’ll thank yourself at the end of a tiring day.
